He received his board certification in General Surgery from the American Board of Surgery.
He completed his 5 years of general surgery residency training at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
After completing his residency in 2005, Dr Tan was certified in General Surgery under the American Board of Surgery.
He returned to Singapore to join Alexandra Hospital after his residency was complete.
He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program scholarship in 2010.
This scholarship helped him form a sub-specialization in Liver Surgery and Transplantation through a clinical fellowship at the living-donor hepatectomy program at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan.
His keen involvement with general surgery resident training led to the introduction of the metrics-based Fundamental of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) training system in 2011.
He gained accreditation for KTPH to become the first FLS Regional Testing Centre in Asia.
