- He obtained his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, USA in 1999.
- He received his M.D. from Indiana University and trained in the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency in Arizona.
- He received his board certification in General Surgery from the American Board of Surgery.
- He completed his 5 years of general surgery residency training at the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.
- After completing his residency in 2005, Dr Tan was certified in General Surgery under the American Board of Surgery.
- He returned to Singapore to join Alexandra Hospital after his residency was complete.
- He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program scholarship in 2010.
- This scholarship helped him form a sub-specialization in Liver Surgery and Transplantation through a clinical fellowship at the living-donor hepatectomy program at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan.
- His keen involvement with general surgery resident training led to the introduction of the metrics-based Fundamental of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) training system in 2011.
- He gained accreditation for KTPH to become the first FLS Regional Testing Centre in Asia.
