Different Types of Bone Marrow Transplant
Autologous transplant - Healthy stem cells from the patient are collected and then transplanted in place of the diseased bone marrow. The diseased stem cells are eliminated by a heavy dose of chemotherapy or radiation therapy from the body of the patient. This type of transplant is called an autologous transplant as the patient is also the donor of the healthy stem cells.
Allogeneic transplant - The healthy stem cells are collected from the family members of the patient who are a match for them. The diseased bone marrow of the patient is eliminated by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. This type of transplant is called an allogeneic transplant.
Umbilical cord blood transplant - The umbilical cord has a lot of stem cells and it can be preserved. These stem cells from the umbilical cord can be collected can transplanted in place of the damaged stem cells of the patient.
